General Project Description

The upper roadways of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge were replaced with a grid deck in 1982. Due to normal wear and tear, the upper roadway has reached the end of its service life. The intent of this project is to replace the upper roadway on the main bridge and resurface the Manhattan and Queens approached to the upper roadway.

The existing grid deck will be replaced with a new steel orthotropic deck along with a new upgraded barrier system. The new cross section of the upper roadway will remain the same, supporting four lanes of traffic.

Other work involved in this contract includes but is not limited to removal of stringers and diaphragms in selected bays, installation or new scuppers and deck joints, structural steel repairs, installation of a new fire standpipe, installation of new underdeck lighting, replacement of concrete overfill and joints within the approaches.

The Queensboro Bridge carries the largest number of vehicles crossing the East River with average weekday traffic of 180,000 vehicles and 800 cyclists/pedestrians. The upper roadways have four traffic lanes to accommodate both buses (only at rush hours) and passenger cars.
