Change to Illinois M/WBE rules increases opportunities for women

On July 17, Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn signed into law a measure that will allow women that are also minorities to become simultaneously certified by the state as minority-owned businesses (MBEs) and women-owned businesses (WBEs).
Previously, firms owned by minority women had to select one certification or the other, which limited the number of opportunities for contracting with the state available to them.
"This new law will level the playing field and provide equal opportunity for all firms to participate in state projects," the governor said. "I am committed to doing everything necessary to ensure that participation in our public works projects reflects the rich diversity of our state."
The law will take effect immediately.
