Concern over Tulsa's BRIDGE program suspension
Published on 08/14/2014

Several Tulsa-area contractors have expressed concern about the suspension of Tulsa's Building Resources in Developing and Growing Enterprises (BRIDGE) program.

The BRIDGE program, once administered by the Tulsa's Department of Human Rights, was designed to assist minority and women owned businesses (MWBE) with under $750,000 in assets when bidding on city contracts.

In a June 2nd letter, the City explained that it could no longer support the program in order to be in compliance with a 2012 ballot measure approved by Oklahoma voters that prohibits preferential treatment based on race. The BRIDGE program survived until the validity of the measure was affirmed in the recent Supreme Court decision in Schuette v. BAMN.

Many businesses fear that without the help of the BRIDGE program, city contracts will only be awarded to established general contractors with greater resources than most MWBEs can command.
