Federal government awards nearly $100 billion to small businesses in 2016
Published on 05/30/2017

The federal government has exceeded its small business contracting goal for the fourth consecutive year, according to a recent report from the Small Business Administration (SBA).

For Fiscal Year 2016, the federal government awarded 24.34 percent of all contract dollars to small businesses - totaling $99.96 billion in awards. This is a an increase of over $9 billion from fiscal year 2015.

Companies recognized as Small Disadvantaged Business, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, Women-Owned Small Business, and/or HUBZone Business are eligible to be counted toward the federal small business contracting goal.

Every two years, the SBA works with various federal agencies to set contracting goals that vary by agency. The SBA ensures that the sum of all the goals equals at least 23 percent for the federal government overall, as is required by law. The SBA also provides a scorecard each year that reports on how well the agencies and the federal government overall have done in achieving their small business contracting goals.

The federal government overall received an "A" from the SBA for 2016. Only one of 23 agencies received a "C", while four received a "B"" and the others received grades of "A" or "A+".
