BART poised to approve LGBT business program
Published on 09/05/2017

On September 14th, Bay Area Rapid Transit's (BART) Board of Directors of is due to vote on whether LGBT Business Enterprises (LGBTBEs) should be included in the competitive bidding preference programs offered through its Small Business Program.

"BART has established a track record of prioritizing local, small, disadvantaged, and women-run businesses and this change will be a natural extension of those efforts," said BART Board President Rebecca Saltzman. "We want to do everything we can as an agency to make contracting more inclusive."

BART's finance committee has already voted unanimously to permit the change.

If the change is approved, certified LGBTBEs will receive a 5 percent bid preference on small business prime contracts and will be eligible for an increased preference cap on Measure RR funded contracts. In addition, under the proposed change, LGBTBEs would not be subject to a cap of $14 million on their yearly earnings when bidding under the program.

To qualify, LGBTBEs would need to be certified as such by the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce or the California Public Utilities Commission, as well as certified as a small business by California's Department of General Services.
