A recent study commissioned by Montgomery County in Maryland found that serious disparity exists between the number of qualified minority (MBEs) and women owned contractors (WBEs) that bid on county contracts and the number of those contractors who are awarded those jobs.
In response, the County Council has renewed the existing Minority, Female and Disabled-Owned Businesses Program for one year, as opposed to the five years requested by the county executive branch. In addition, the County Council created two task forces charged with studying the issue and procurement in general.
Council representatives explained that the mere one year authorization of the existing Minority, Female and Disabled-Owned Businesses Program was to allow the task forces time to make recommendations of needed changes to county procurement that may have been difficult if the existing program was reauthorized for its full term.
