During his speech at the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced a new executive order that provides veteran-owned businesses advantages in bidding for city contracts. Walsh further explained that the preferential treatment currently being offered by the city to minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) was going to be extended in an identical fashion to firms owned by veterans.
Under the current system, the city assigns significantly more weight to bids submitted by MWBEs and Walsh hopes the same treatment will invigorate the businesses of qualifying veterans. In addition, qualifying veteran-owned firms will receive a weekly dispatch from the city that outlines the current city contracts up for bid. Another significant piece of the executive order was that a minimum percentage of city contract awards are now going to be earmarked for veteran-owned firms.
While Walsh has stated his commitment to supporting veteran-owned businesses, there has yet to be a firm timeline for when the changes will take place. At the current date, the city’s legal team is examining the order and readying it for legal implementation.
