Westchester County Office of Economic Development enhancing MWBE program
Published on 01/27/2020

Westchester County's Office of Economic Development recently announced several steps they are taking to enhance their minority- and woman-owned business enterprise (MWBE) program. Changes will be made to the participation goals, re-establishing the technical assistance plan committee, and the registration process for county contracting.

The goal for MWBE participation has been doubled, from 10 percent to 20 percent, with the intent to raise that goal to 30 percent in the near future. The technical assistance plan committee, which had been inactive, will be able to craft training programs and other support opportunities for MWBEs. Additionally, MWBEs who are already certified as such by the state of New York or by a number of other specified entities will now be able to use a short form to enter into county contracting while being counted as MWBEs for the purposes of county participation goals.

Given that Westchester County spends hundreds of millions of dollars per year on contracting, these changes are intended to give MWBEs a better shot at accessing those opportunities equitably.
