The Fort Worth City Council has unanimously voted to reduced the number of days permitted for minority- and small-owned businesses (MBEs and SBEs) to provide proof of their MBE and SBE status after being awarded a bid.
Previously, the city's Business Diversity Enterprise ordiance gave MBEs and SBEs five working days to submit their status documentation, but city staff said that the window slowed down the bidding process. Now, MBEs and SBEs will only have two days to submit their documents.
The Council also took steps to strengthen compliance components of the ordinance. Businesses that are awarded a city contract but fail to submit the required MBE and SBE documents within two days will first receive a warning. If the infraction occurs again within a five-year period, the business will be barred from bidding for a year. A third infraction during the same timeframe will result in the disqualification of the firm from doing business with the City of Fort Worth for three years.
City staff will review the ordiance in Decemember to ensure that its aims are being effectively met.
