King County implements Fast Track Small Contractor and Supplier program
Published on 09/21/2021

King County, in partnership with the Washington State Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises (OMWBE), is implementing a Fast Track Small Contractor and Supplier certification program for minority and woman-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) in the county. The program would make King County's Small Contractor and Supplier (SCS) certification reciprocal with the state MWBE certification.

Following the County Council approval of new legislation, the reciprocity will be accomplished by raising King County's size standards for SCS certification. Previously, the SCS size standard was set at 50 percent of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) standard, whereas OMWBE size standards were set at 100 percent; now, both certification will have a size standard of 100 percent of the SBA standard.

The legislation follows several successful years for the SCS program, in which the County has exceeded its SCS participation goals on a yearly basis since 2016. Additionally, the County has awarded $280 million to SCS firms total in that time frame.

"This is one of many steps we are taking in our quest to create economic justice and leverage the tremendous amounts of public investment that's happening to help minority firms grow," said King County Executive Dow Constantine.
