Washington State Governor Jay Inslee announced the creation of a new subcabinet that will work to increase minority-, women- and veteran-owned business participation on state contacts.
At present, only one percent of the state's $6.1 billion in annual contract awards go to these businesses.
"Successful small businesses led by women, minorities and veterans help make our economy and our families more resilient," said the governor. "The current rate is unacceptable, we must do better."
The subcabinet, which is headed by the Washington Department of Enterprise Services, is tasked with determining why small and diverse businesses have difficulty getting involved in public contracting and offering recommendations for resolving the state's lack of inclusiveness.
