MnDOT falls short of 2015 DBE contracting goal
Published on 01/28/2016

Last month, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announced that it achieved a 7.3 percent disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE) goal in 2015, short of the annual 10.3 percent goal set by the department.

"While we made some progress over the last half of the fiscal year, we are not pleased with this number," said MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle. "We worked hard along with many different stakeholders to meet the objective.  We will continue to work both tried and true as well as new ways to increase the percentage of DBEs working on MnDOT projects. We welcome any certified DBE companies that are not now working on our projects to contact us and learn how to get involved with our DBE program."

Of the 7.3 percent that went to certified DBEs, more than 92 percent was spent with non-minority women-owned firms. The remaining DBE expenditures were distributed between black, Subcontinent Asian, Hispanic, Native American, and Asian Pacific American-owned firms.

Kim Collins, MnDOT's civil rights director, has indicated that her office will make efforts to increase the department's contracting with companies other than those owned by non-minority women.
