Gov. Cuomo eyes MWBE expansion
Published on 01/29/2016

Local governments across New York State may soon be required to contend with Albany's minority and women-owned business enterprise (MWBE) contracting goals, under a new proposal announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo this month.

At present, the state has a 30 percent MWBE goal for contracts issued by state agencies and authorities. Local governments, however, are not required to abide by this goal even when its procurement money comes from the state. Gov. Cuomo's aims to change this with new legislation.

"We must extend our MWBE program to all state dollars in order to ensure fairness in economic opportunity," said Governor Cuomo. "This proposal will help minority and women-owned businesses compete for another $65 billion in state contracts. This is about continuing New York’s legacy as a national leader on economic justice, and I am proud to be leading the fight again this year."

Legislation supporting the governor's proposal has already been introduced in the Assembly.
