Austin schools to require good faith efforts on contracts
Published on 03/07/2016

At the of February, the Austin School Board green-lighted a program aimed at making more of the district's contract awards available to historically underutilized businesses (HUBs), which are usually owned by minorities or women.

The decision follows the board's consideration of a study that found that HUBs were largely excluded from the Austin School District's (AISD) passive participation in discriminatory practices.

At the core of AISD's newly-approved HUB program is the use of contract-specific HUB participation goals. Many AISD contracts will have aspirational minority- and women-owned business subcontracting goals that prime contractors will be obligated to make a good faith effort to meet.

The program will be implemented by September 1, 2018.
