Last week, the Memphis City Council voted to establish a 15 percent minority and women business enterprise (MWBE) goal on architectural and engineering subcontracts.
The change in procurement policy was coupled with an increase in the city's annual MWBE participation goals. The city will now aim to spend 20 percent of all subcontracts with minority-owned businesses and 5 percent with women-owned businesses.
Previously, the city had a 16 percent MBE goal and a 3 percent WBE goal.
The Council's recent updates to the city's Equal Business Opportunity ordinance also requires the city of recognize MWBE certifications issued by Shelby County and publish reports on the city's progress toward greater supplier diversity.
