According to figures released last week by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), Disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs) are doing more business with the department, but still not at the levels expected.
For Fiscal Year 2016, which ended on September 30th, MnDOT spent 8.5 percent of federal transportation dollars with DBEs. The department's goal for the year was 11.7 percent.
"The report shows an increase in DBE participation from 2015," said Kim Collins, MnDOT’s Office of Civil Rights director. "The Office of Civil Rights and the agency will continue working with public and private sector stakeholders to meet the goal. We are confident that using race/gender-neutral small business training to build capacity and financial literacy will improve DBE participation in MnDOT programs. We will continue to explore technological and administrative solutions to supporting DBE success, and we welcome any certified DBE companies that are not now working on our projects to contact us and learn how to get involved with our program."
Collins also stressed that even though MnDOT missed it's annual DBE goal, prime contractors meet the DBE goals on individual contracts almost every time.
