Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown signed a series of executive orders intended to increase the amount of business the city does with minority and women-owned companies (MBEs / WBEs).
Through these measures, the city will create a minority/women-owned business enterprise committee tasked with developing programs meant to encourage and assist MBEs and WBEs interested in competing for city contracts.
Additionally, prime contractors bidding on city contracts will now be required to make a good faith effort to subcontract 25 percent of each contract to MBEs and 5 percent of each contract to WBEs.
The city will also incentive larger contractors to take part in a mentor-protege protege program, which will introduce MBEs and WBEs to the contracting process.
