This week, trustees at the University of Illinois are scheduled to review a proposal that would increase the institution's minority and women business (MWBE) contracting goals and create a veteran business enterprise program.
If approved, the University's MWBE participation goals on construction contracts would increase from 10 percent to 20 percent system-wide, except at the Chicago campus where the goal would be 30 percent.
The University of Illinois's MWBE spending figures have seen marked improvement in recent years. In 2016, the system spent $44.8 million worth of construction contracts with MWBEs, compared to just $22.1 million three years prior.
Additionally, the proposal would set a 3 percent military veteran and disabled veteran-owned business spending goal for the university.
