New programs to help New York State MWBEs grow
Published on 05/15/2017

New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced two new programs designed to help minority and women-owned businesses (MWBEs) become certified with the state and win more government contracts.

"We must ensure that MWBE entrepreneurs have the capacity to fully participate in our economy's vibrant growth," said Empire State Development (ESD) President, CEO & Commissioner Howard Zemsky. "The MWBE Business Growth Accelerator Program and MWBE Certification Assistance Program provide the state with another tool to support the growth of MWBE firms and ensure their participation in state contracting."

Through the Business Growth Accelerator, MWBEs can receive training and assistance, plus attend seminars on the topic of growing their businesses through various local providers with experience in working with the business community. The Accelerator program will be developed by up to five grantees, and is set to last 18 months for the MWBEs that participate in it.

The Certification Assistance Program, by contrast, is targeted towards businesses that are not yet certified by the state as MWBEs. Through this initiative, businesses can have their MWBE certification applications reviewed by experts prior to submitting the application to the state. Like the Accelerator program, it will be developed by up to five grantees.

Both programs will be overseen by ESD's Division of Minority and Women’s Business Development.
