Bill to Raise DVBE Bid Preference on State Contracts to 10% Now Moving Toward the California State Senate

The California State Assembly Committee on Veteran's Affairs voted 6-1 to increase the current bid preference on disabled veteran owned businesses from three to ten percent on all state contracts. The bill, authored by Speaker pro Tem Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/Daly City), is aimed at increasing participation by disabled veterans, who year after year receive less than three percent of state contracts despite goals set by the Department of General Services to reach that number.
“A ten percent bid preference is the least we can do to recognize the sacrifice disabled veterans have paid for all of us,” said Speaker pro Tem Yee. “The men and women in uniform who have been disabled in the course of their service to our country deserve some assistance in their transition to civilian business life.”
There are currently fewer than 500 registered DVBE firms in California. But with the increasing numbers of veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan, this program will enable those veterans disabled in their service to this nation a chance to find descent paying jobs here at home.
AB 410 now heads to the Assembly Appropriations Committee before a vote by the entire Assembly and State Senate.
