California to receive federal transportation dollars

California may receive up to $43 million in federal money to put toward its transportation projects, according to California Department of Transportation Director Malcolm Dougherty.
On August 24, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood announced that the federal government is reclaiming $470 million in unused earmarks and will redistribute the money among the states.
Any federal dollars allocated to California must be planned for use before October 1, and obligated before December 31, 2012.
At the present time, the projects that may receive federal funding have not been identified. Candidate projects, however, must already been eligible for federal funding.
