Houston formally includes LGBTBEs in City procurement
Published on 03/10/2021

The City of Houston has become the first city in Texas to institute a policy of encouraging the participation of LGBT-owned businesses (LGBTBEs) in City procurement. The policy was passed through an executive order from the Office of Mayor Sylvester Turner. The order was signed on March 4, 2021.

The City of Houston's Office of Business Opportunity (OBO) will incorporate LGBTBEs certified by the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) into its own certification directory. Once present in the OBO directory, LGBTBEs will be eligible to take part in the various business development initiatives, seminars, training opportunities, and newsletters the OBO provides to certified businesses. The executive order also contains a general committment to ensuring equitable access to City contracts for LGBTBEs.

"The City of Houston [is] proud to formally memorialize this commitment to the LGBT community," Mayor Turner said in a press release.
