City of Springfield releases data on MWBE utilization
Published on 03/15/2021

The Office of Mayor Domenic Sarno for the City of Springfield has recently issued a statement on the utilization of minority- and woman-owned businesses (MWBEs) in City contracting. The statement covers the period of fiscal year 2019.

During that time period, the City issued 315 contracts with 40 (or 12.7 percent) of those contracts being awarded to MWBEs; 13.1 percent of the total dollar amount of contracts issued during the period was awarded to MWBEs.

The Mayor's Office also announced, partially in response to criticism of these numbers that 112 out of 169 (or 72 percent) of grants (with the grants representing $1.5 million in total value) in the City's "Prime the Pump" economic recovery program have been awarded to minority-, woman-, and veteran-owned businesses.

"While all city contracts must meet all legal procurement guidelines and requirements, we always strive for continued betterment," said Mayor Sarno in a statement.
